When does my baby goat need to be disbudded/dehorned?

• Bucklings' (male babies) horn buds are usually ready when they are three to seven days old (depending on rate of growth).
• Doelings' (female babies) horn buds are usually ready when they are six to fourteen days old (depending on rate of growth).

Why should I disbud/dehorn my baby goat?

• They are safer to handle as adults (especially if you have children!).
• They won't get their horns stuck in the fence--a common killer.
• They can't injure other goats, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

When does my baby male goat need to be castrated/banded?

• They are ready to be neutered when they are seven to ten weeks old (depending on maturity).

Why should I castrate/band my baby male goat?

• They are easier to work with at maturity, without the testosterone.
• They never get smelly (no annual rut!).
• They live much longer--a buck's (unneutered male) average lifespan is about eight years, while a wether's (neutered male) is closer to twelve years.
